PEARMAN, George William

No.83047, Gunner, George William PEARMAN
Aged 32

91st Anti Aircraft Section, Royal Garrison Artillery
Died of Illness on Thursday 18th December 1918

George William PEARMAN was born in Stetchworth in 1886 (Newmarket Q2-1886 3B:561), baptised 18th July 1886 in Stetchworth, son of William and Harriett PEARMAN (née COOK).

1891 census... Aged 4, George William PEARSON, he was at Dullingham Ley with his grandfather William BAILEY [57] agricultural labourer born Stetchworth and his grandmother Ann [53] (née PEARMAN) born Dullingham.
His father William BAILEY [32] a brewer's assistant, born Cambridgeshire was at High Street, Stetchworth with his mother Harriet BAILEY [27], sister Edith M [3], sister Beatrice V. [2] and brother Reuben T. [1 month], all Stetchworth born, all recorded as BAILEY on the census.

1901 census...Aged 14, an agricultural labourer, he was still PEARMAN, at Dullingham Ley with his grandparents. His parents ( still BAILEY) were in Tea Kettle Lane, Stetchworth, father now a gardener, with his sister Beatrice and brother Albert [6], sister Hilda [4] and sister Jane [2 months] both born in Stetchworth.

1911 census...George ( now BAILEY ) was 24, single and living in Dullingham Ley with his grandparents William and Ann BAILEY.
His father William BAILEY, mother Harriet BAILEY, sister Hilda and brothers Albert ( a gardener) and Frederick were at Stetchworth. Three of the nine children of the marriage had died.

The switching of surnames in this family between grandmother's maiden name (PEARMAN) and grandfather's name of BAILEY is unusual. No reason can be found. From his military records, signed by his father, in 1919 his parents William and Harriett PEARMAN were in Stetchworth, with his brother Fred [15] and he had a brother Albert who was then 23 and in the Army in Egypt, a married sister, Mrs Beatrice Munroe [31],living in 80 Leathwaite Road, Battersea and another sister Hilda Pearman [22] living in 69 Streatham Hill, London. The births of these children appear to be Stetchworth but they have not been identified in any census. CWGC have his parents at Mill Road, Stetchworth.

Brother Albert served as Albert PEARMAN in the Rifle Brigade, No. 213184, enlisting 7th September 1914 giving his age as 24 (added on 5). He had been a gardener to the Earl of Ellesmere. Wounded in France on 30th September 1915, recovered, sent to Egypt on 4th February 1918.. he survived the war.

He is recorded by the Army as PEARMAN and PEARMAIN. He enlisted in Newmarket on 29th February 1916, giving his age as 29 yrs 9 months, and address as Dullingham Ley, a farm labourer. He was 5' 7.75" (172.1 cm), weighed 148 lbs (67.1 kg) and chest 37" to 40" (94 to 101.6 cm), with dark hair and hazel eyes
Posted to the Reserves 1st March 1916 he was mobilised on 19th May 1916 and posted to the Artillery depot in Dover.
He was posted to the A.A.D ? on 20th June and then to 91st Anti-Aircraft Section on 23rd September 1916.
He left Southampton on 23th October 1916, arriving in Salonika on the 2nd November. He had three bouts of illness in 1918 and then was admitted to No. 28 General Hospital in Kalamaria on 13th December with flu symptoms and died 5 days later of pneumonia.
His personal effects sent to his parents in 1919 comprised : disc, letter, cards, photos, cap badge and a devotional book.
